WAEC releases results of candidates of indebted states

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has yielded to pressure to release the results of candidates for the May/June 2015 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), earlier withheld as a result of indebtedness by some states.

This was due to the intervention of the Nigeria Governors Forum and other stakeholders who appealed to the examination body to reconsider its decision in view of the effect the withholding of the results would have on the future of the candidates.

Mum bursts into a chapel after 'slashing her 3-month-old baby’s throat

Police say they have arrested a woman suspected of killing her 3-month-old baby by slashing his throat in a cemetery chapel in a small central Spanish town.
A Civil Guard spokesman said the woman, a 37-year-old Spaniard, was arrested early Wednesday in the cemetery of Villa de Don Fadrique, located just southeast of Madrid.
According to reports, the woman had recently spent time in a psychiatric hospital and picked up her son that day from a relative's house.

Senators reject pay cut recommendation by panel

The Senate on Wednesday suspended consideration of the report of its Finance committee following disagreements among members over the pay cut recommended by the panel.
 
It was gathered that during a 2 hour deliberation behind closed doors the senators resolved to reject the reduction of salaries and allowances as recommended by the Senator James Manager’s committee.
The senators said it was not possible to accept pay cut with other beneficiaries of the N120bn National Assembly annual budget not doing same. He said his colleagues also resolved to reject the report because the recommendations were not practicable.

Following a distress call received from Local Divers at about 3:10 pm today, 12th August, 2015, that a Helicopter plunged into the Lagos Lagoon at Oworonshoki, a team of Policemen and other emergency management agencies swiftly moved to the scene. During the rescue operation, six persons on board the helicopter were rescued alive and taken to the hospital for medical attention and are responding to treatment, while four corpses were recovered.

4 confirmed dead in Lagos Helicopter crash

4 people have been confirmed dead from the Bristol helicopter that crashed into the Lagos Lagoon around the Oworonshoki end of the 3rd mainland bridge in Lagos yesterday. 6 people were rescued while the search for two more persons is currently ongoing. The bodies of the dead passengers have been deposited at the Mainland hospital.

Ooni of Ife to be buried on Friday August 14th

Son of the Ooni of Ife, Prince Adetokunboh Sijuwade says his father, the Ooni of Ife Oba Okunade Sijuwade who died July 28th will be buried in Ile Ife on Friday August 14th. Prince Adetokunboh who made the announcement at a joint press conference with the Osun state governor Rauf Aregbesola and a palace chief, said his father's body will be flown from the UK on today Thursday August 13th and then buried on Friday 14th.

ISIS brutally beheads Croatian hostage who was kidnapped in Cairo

ISIS in Egypt have beheaded the Croatian hostage who they kidnapped on July 22nd in Cairo. The man, 30-year-old father of two Tomislav Salopek, was seen begging for his life in a chilling video message released last week by ISIS. ISIS had threatened to execute him unless 'all Muslim women' are freed from Egyptian jails. An ISIS supporter shared a photo of his body on Twitter yesterday.

The gruesome image (which has been censored) shows Mr Salopek's severed head placed on his back and buried in the sand next to his bloodied corpse is the chilling black and white flag used by ISIS.

Lagos releases N11bn to pay pensioners

The Lagos State Government has released N11bn to pay off pension liabilities in arrears in the state since 2010 to date.
The Head of Service, Mrs. Folashade Jaji, on Wednesday in Alausa, Ikeja, said the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, had directed that the sum should be used to pay the pension liabilities of the Lagos State Government mainstream retirees and the retirees in local governments areas.

Cincinnati man shoots at 1-year-old boy, is shot by man with a gun

A 62-year-old man with a gun in each hand fired at 4 people, including a 1-year-old boy, before a civilian with a concealed carry permit returned fire and wounded the shooter.
The shooter, Thomas McCary is being held without bond on 4 counts of felonious assault.
McCary was arguing with a woman around 8 p.m. Sunday night and, when the woman’s brother, Patrick Ewing, approached, McCary pulled out a .38-caliber handgun and fired 3 shots at him, Cincinnati police said.

The 43-year-old whose real name is Trevor Tahiem Smith Jr., threw the cardboard Lean Body protein drink container during a dispute with the employee at the Steel Gym around 8:30 p.m., police said.

7 Boko Haram militants killed in a clash with Chadian security forces

Yesterday Wednesday August 5th, 7 Boko Haram militants were killed by security forces in part of a two-week campaign on the lake that borders Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon, a security source says.
"Boko Haram fighters in boats opened fire on our forces on the island of Tchoukou Dallah. Seven of their fighters were killed and there were others wounded," said the security source.
