A 28 year old Nigerian student of Kampala University identified as Rufus Okafor has been arrested in Kampala, Uganda after he was intercepted with 19 kilograms of marijuana and 795grames of heroin worth sh229m at Posta Uganda on Friday January 15th. Looters should have their hands amputated and hung to death —House of Reps member says

A member of the House of Representatives, Umar Yakubu Barde has advocated for the amputation of hands of those found guilty of stealing from the Nation's treasury. Speaking in an interactive session with the some journalist in Kaduna state yesterday January 18th, Barde who is a PDP member representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, said those who stole in millions of Naira should have their hands amputated, while those who looted in billions of Naira should be hanged to death. He called for special court rather than the conventional courts, saying that looters usually use such courts to delay justice.

TB Joshua files fresh application to stop trial over death of 116 persons

The Registered Trustees of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations, founded by Prophet TB Joshua, have filed another suit to stop the Lagos State Government from going ahead with their prosecution before the Lagos High Court in Ikeja over the death of 116 persons on September 12, 2014 when a six-storey building collapsed on the premises of the church in Ikotun area of the State.
In the fresh suit filed before Justice Kazeem Alogba of Ikeja High Court, the Trustees o
f the church are asking the court to stop their proposed arraignment before Justice Lawal Lateef-Akapo of the same court.

Tanzanian President bans miniskirts in bid to curb the spread of HIV/Aids

Tanzanian president John Pombe Magufuli has reportedly banned the wearing of miniskirts in the country saying he believes the garments, along with short dresses, encourage the spread of HIV/Aids.

Tanzania Cultural Development Director Herman Mwansoko said all Tanzanian women have three months within which to "get rid of miniskirts for replacement with decent garments."

Lassa fever kills two in Plateau as Delta state records first case

Two people lost their lives after they contracted the now prevalent Lassa fever in Plateau state. The State commissioner for Health, Dr. Kuden Kamshak who confirmed the death of the two victims yesterday January 18th, said they died at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where they were being treated. This brings to three the number of people that have died from the disease in Plateau state.

Leader of notorious bank robbery gang arrested

The alleged leader of the notorious gang of bank robbers, Clement Abanara, was arrested by the police in an apartment at the Osayande Estate over the weekend according to the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT in Benin, Edo State.

It was gathered that the suspect, also known as 'Million', allegedly took part in the Lekki, Ikorodu, Festac and Agbara bank robberies in Lagos where his gang made away with millions of naira, destroyed several vehicles and left several persons injured, including policemen and a pregnant woman, dead.

No new case of Lassa fever in Lagos

The Lagos State Government, yesterday, disclosed that there is no new case of Lassa fever in the state. It also said that the 25-year-old  undergraduate of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, who was infected with the fever is presently responding to treatment in the hospital.

History was made yesterday Sunday January 17th when the new Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II paid an unexpected visit to the Alaafin Of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi who was celebrating his 45th coronation anniversary on the throne. It was the first time in 79 years that an Ooni of Ife will visit an Alaafin of Oyo, following a cold war of supremacy said to have been in existence between the (previous) two monarchs for over 7 decades. The last time a reigning Ooni of Ife visited an Alaafin was in 1937.

Desperate search for flight attendant last seen at the airport

A desperate search is underway for a flight attendant who disappeared from an airport before she was set to leave on her next trip. Sierra Shields, 30, was set to take off from La Guardia Airport in New York on a Delta flight on Thursday, but vanished before she made it to the plane.

Her work supervisor said she came in and spoke to her earlier in the day, and suddenly quit without an explanation. Friends and family also said they had noticed something different about her in recent days

Japan ski tour bus in Nagano crash kills 14, injures 27

An overnight bus on its way to a ski resort in central Japan careened off a mountain road early Friday, killing 14 passengers and injuring 27 others.

Fire and disaster management officials said the bus veered into the opposite lane near the famous resort town of Karuizawa, in Nagano prefecture, rammed through a guardrail and slid down the mountainside a short distance. TV footage showed the bus resting on its side against some trees, bent in the middle.

New Ebola case emerges in Sierra Leone

Health officials in Sierra Leone have confirmed a death from Ebola, hours after the World Health Organization declared the West Africa outbreak over.
The country was declared free of the virus on 7 November, and the region as a whole cleared when Liberia was pronounced Ebola-free on Thursday.

But two tests conducted on a boy who died in northern Sierra Leone proved positive for the virus, a health ministry spokesman told the BBC.

It is not clear when the boy died.
