Atiku Speaks On How Women, Girl-Child Rights Must Be Protected By FG

While speaking at the public presentation of a book, “Re-thinking The Legal Framework for Rights of Women and Girl-child in Nigeria” a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has offered a number of ways to protect and endorse the rights of women and the girl-child in Nigeria.

The book was written in honour of the founder, Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF), Amina Titi Atiku Abubakar, the wife of the ex-Vice President.

Atiku Abubakar, who is also an APC presidential candidate, proposed the ways to protect and endorse the rights of women and the girl-child to contain free obligatory basic education for all children under 18 years of age, to be supported by the states and local governments with support of the Federal Government (FG); public health efforts to ease the rate of maternal and child mortality; establishment of a well-funded welfare system, fighting sexual violence against women by encouraging them to speak out about sexual violence and other violations of their rights and avoidance of all forms of child cruelty such as child labour, child marriage and child abandonment.


The former Vice President criticized the poor educational, health and social condition of women and the girl-child in the Nigerian society and condemned the absence of opportunities for the girl-child.
He, meanwhile, acclaimed the effort and precaution of the founder of WOTCLEF and the team that made the venture a success.

According to him, “educating girls is vital to society because girls who acquire education tend to become better mothers, and tend to have fewer, healthier and well-looked after children.”
It would be noted that one of the main figures of the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) Atiku Abubakar

However, Atiku has served as the vice president on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku is married to Titi (Albert) Abubakar, and has four children: Fatima, Adamu, Halima and Aminu.
