NATIONAL CONFAB: Muslim Group Accuses CAN Of Selfishness

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, of selfishness and warned it to stop poke-nosing into the affairs of Muslims in the country.

The group was responding to comments by the secretary-general of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Musa Asake, who accused the Sultan of Sokoto, the spiritual leader of all Muslims in Nigeria, of leading a delegation of Muslims to President Jonathan on Wednesday, 26 March, attempting to polarise the country along religious lines.

In an interview with Punch newspaper, Saturday, Mr. Asake condemned a protest by the Muslim leaders, which, he said, was a plot to frustrate the ongoing National Conference.

“The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, had a press conference where they said Christians are 52 per cent at the conference; meanwhile, we are just 40 per cent of the country’s population. I responded immediately. I don’t understand what the Sultan is up to. Is the conference on religious basis? We are going to respond because they are trying to divide this country and create a big problem. Let the whole world know that the Sultan and his people are trying to make sure that this national conference does not take place.

Tech giant, Apple sues Samsung for $2 billion

The smartphone world's fiercest rivalry is heading back to court again this week in the heart of the Silicon Valley, as Apple and Samsung begin a new trial - accusing each other, once again, of ripping off designs and features.

In the new trial Apple is seeking damages of $2bn, claiming infringement of five patents by Samsung devices sold in the US between 2010 and 2012, including Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Samsung is claiming infringement of two of its patents by the iPhone and iPad. Jury selection begins on Monday relating to data transmission and the use of video, audio and photos.

It also claims patents on autocorrection when words are typed. In addition, Apple says Samsung copied "Slide to Unlock," which allows users to swipe the face of their smartphone to use it.

There have been different views on the recently passed smoking law since it was signed by the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola on 17^th of February 2014. 

We have now obtained a copy of the law and are surprised to read that contrary to what some people think, the law only becomes effective on the 17^th of August 2014, which is six months after the Governor signed. This means that even the police that have been harassing smokers are not aware of this. Incredibly, the law also allows for smoking in open places such as on the streets, roads and highways as wells as in 10% of hotels, bars, night clubs and tertiary institutions. It even goes further to state that the law will be enforced by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), meanwhile all manner of people have been harassing smokers, even LATSMA and Boys Scout.. Can our government ensure that the public are well informed about laws they pass to prevent undue harassment of its citizens.

Tears flow, mother collapses, as another immigration victim is buried

Another victim of the immigration stampede, Sunday Okezie Kalu, an indigene of Abia has been buried over the weekend.

Sunday was one of the many applicants, who came in their thousands for the immigration screening exercise on Saturday 15th March at the Elekahia Stadium in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers and he was one of the unfortunate one who lost their lives.

Residents of Okon-Aku in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State wailed as the remains of Kalu, a graduate of Microbiology arrived from Port Harcourt.

His body left Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH) at 6am in a white ambulance which was escorted to his hometown by his weeping friends, who handed the body to Ohafia youths. They then took it round the community.

When the body got to his family home, the late Kalu’s 48-year-old mother, Mrs. Justina Okezie Kalu, reportedly went into a coma and almost died.

His father was speechless, his legs trembling and his head bowed as he saw his son's lifeless body arriving in an ambulance.

The people at the funeral rejected a condolence message by the State Command of NIS saying it should not be read, as it was unnecessary.

Actor Hafiz Oyetoro Saka Debunks Spiritual Attack Rumour

Comic actor Hafiz Oyetoro who recently lost some of his belongings to a fire outbreak at his office in Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education has debunked rumour that the fire outbreak was caused by a spiritual attack.

Saka said:“I don’t believe it has to do with spiritual attack. I was not the only person affected by the incident. Offices of eight lecturers were burnt by the fire. I don’t think anything should be attached to it. That is life; life is full of challenges. You don’t dwell on bad occurrences. As far as I am concerned, it has happened and there is nothing anybody can do about it. I only pray that God gives me the courage to go ahead and I am willing to go ahead. SSS confirms 21 deaths after failed jailbreak by Boko Haram men

Marilyn Ogar, the spokesperson for the Department of State Security Services (SSS) said yesterday that 21 detained terrorists died during the attempted jailbreak at the Service's headquarters in Abuja on Sunday morning.

"Following our earlier releases, it has been established that eighteen (18) casualties were recorded, while two (2) Service personnel sustained serious injuries. Three (3) other detainees who sustained gunshot injuries during the incident have also died.

"Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing to ascertain the immediate and remote causes.

"We wish to state that the roads leading to the office were cordoned-off to prevent possible assistance from external collaborators. During this period, the precinct of the office and adjoining neighborhoods were thoroughly searched.

"We wish to restate our commitment to the safety of the people and the Nigerian nation at large.” Marilyn Ogar said in a further statement released yesterday

Actor Joseph Benjamin was a guest on Rubbin Minds yesterday Sunday March 30th where he opened up about his divorce. When the host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, asked him if he was finally divorced, the father of two said he was 'working on it.'

Ebuka also took him up on rumours of violence and infidelity being the reason for his separation, Benjamin said it wasn't true. What he said below...

Another LASU student killed, dumped at Ijesha Lagos

A 300 level Economics student of the Lagos State University (LASU) identified as Miss Rita Onwuli, has been murdered by unknown persons in Lagos.
Her lifeless body was found near a church at the Odo Olowu Street, Ijeshatedo, on the Apapa – Oshodi Expressway, Lagos.

According to report, Rita had left home on Tuesday and for three days, she was nowhere to be found. Her friends, colleagues and family members searched for her to no avail and on Thursday, they got the shock of their life as they were called to come and see dead body.

American Babysitter Beats 4-Yr-Old To Death, Pleads Not Guilty

A 53-year-old babysitter allegedly beat the 4-year-old girl and instead of calling 911 took her to the hospital on public transport.

According to the police, little Mya Migneault (pictured above), whose mother was away in the South, died from blunt abdominal trauma shortly after arrival to the healthcare institution.

Scott however pleaded not guilty and is currently being held in lieu of $1.1 million bail.

Speaking with journalists the assault victim's grandfather, Gary Greenberg, said the girl was a perfect unspoilt child, adding: "Mya was my whole life."

The next hearing will be held on April 7.

Pastor Kidnapped Baby In Akure, Demands Ransom From Parents

A two-year-old girl kidnapped by a Pastor and one other person has been rescued by Ondo state Police Command and the kidnappers arrested.

The baby who was kidnapped a few weeks ago in Akure was rescued in Ughelli, Delta state on Saturday where the Pastor had  kept her with a middle aged woman after fleeing with other suspects to Balyesa state.

The 28-year-old Pastor Okpara Emmanuel Chigozie of Believers Prayer Ministry, Orji, Owerri, Imo state and the other suspect, 25-year-old Chinonye Anufor were said to have requested a sum of N50m as ransom from the Parents of the kidnapped girl but reduced the money to N5million after negotiation.

The Police PPRO, Wole Ogodo said that acting on a tip-off, the detectives stormed the hide out of the kidnappers where the woman and the baby were found.

 

The Police spokesman said that the detectives after rescuing the baby returned to the state with the baby at about 1am on Saturday.

N/Delta youths tell Jonathan to sack Alison-Madueke, Moro in 14 days

President Goodluck Jonathan has been given a 14-day ultimatum by the Niger Delta youths to sack embattled Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke and the Minister of Interior Affairs, Mr Abba Moro or be ready for a mother-of-all-protest in Abuja.

The protesting youths, under the aegis of Niger Delta People’s Salvation Front (NDPSF) took to the streets, in Effurun Delta state in a demonstration which was led by spokesman for ex-militant, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, Comrade Rex Anighoro.

Anighoro said Moro has proved he has no regard for the life of the Nigerian youth with what happened during the immigration tests.

"It is a shame a nation of Nigeria’s status can’t carry out a recruitment exercise without wasting lives. It is a shame that the minister had to use stadia for such an exercise. Nigeria has betrayed its youths who shunned criminality, went to university only to come back and there are no jobs. We have concluded that Abba Moro must go.

"The minister of petroleum is absolutely corrupt, spending so much as N10 billion on chartered jets, while our mothers in the villages are unable to afford three square meals. Diezani must go. NDPSF in collaboration with youths from all parts of Delta have come to demand that these ministers should resign their appointments or be sacked by the president," he said.

According to Anigoro, if President Jonathan fails to sack both ministers within the 14 days, the Saturday protest would shift to Abuja.

Nobody Pays Condolence Visit To The Family Of Late Singer Zara

Family members of the late Nigerian singer Zara Gretti, who passed away at her home in Ogba, Lagos, on March 28, 2014, lament that none of her friends or colleagues have paid a condolence visit since.

"Nobody has come here since she died, you are the first person. Thank you," one of the relatives who asked his name not to be disclosed, told NET correspondent having come to their Lagos residence.

However, numerous celebrities and media personalities took to their social pages to pay tribute to Zara Gretti, who had been battling multiple sclerosis for years.

Man burnt to death by a mysterious fire in Akwa Ibom

The residents of Ikot Oku Mfang in Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom were shocked when they found out what happened to their 46-year-old neighbour.

The man, identified as Mfon Daniel Nduke, was roasted alive by a mysterious fire in his own apartment. Property worth millions of naira was also destroyed in the incident.

According to witnesses, the fire started at about 9 pm and burnt the victim completely.
An elder brother of the victim and owner of the building said the cause of the fire was still a mystery.
He told the members of the household were in bed, when they suddenly started feeling some kind of smoke. Soon the entire house was covered in smoke.

The fire service of the state did not officially confirm the cause of the fire. Failure of a kerosene lamp might have been a possible reason, but this has to be investigated additionally.

‘If I Run The Red Light, Arrest Me!’ – Oshiomhole Tells Edo Traffic Agency

Edo state Governor Adams Oshiomhole over the weekend showed his commitment towards the enforcement of the law in the state by telling the local traffic agency that they have the right to arrest him should he go against the law.

The governor who made this statement at the weekend during a meeting with officials of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (ESTMA) at the government house said

 “You must not extort, you must not criminalise innocent people, you must not let offenders go after extortion. If anybody beats the red light, you must arrest the person no matter his status. If it’s the governor or deputy governor, you must block him and interrogate him. The only person exempted from the red light rule is the President or Deputy President when they visit, in which case the road will be blocked for their easy passage. 

“So if you can stop and interrogate the governor for beating the red light rule, no other person is bigger in the state whom you can’t stop. Anybody that contravenes the red light rule, stop him and detain him for at least two hours. Very many innocent people have been crushed because someone wanted to contravene the red light rule. This must stop”, the governor said.

“I speak the minds of Edo people when I say very many people have been victims of your very crude and harsh traffic management methods.

“When you misbehave as some of you do, people in anger dismiss you as Oshiomhole police. I have no police. In fact, I am one of the very few who have spoken out against state police. I am commended for so many things but not so many people have commended me for this particular intervention, even as you have come into existence to help control traffic”, he said.

Women in revealing clothes deserve to be raped - says a poll in Brazil

According to a report by AFP, a poll in Brazil says a woman who shows off her body deserves to be raped. We are talking about Brazil, the land of samba, voluptuous carnival dancers and mini bikinis.

Of the 3,810 respondents of both sexes who responded to the government’s Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA) survey released last week, about 2,480 - 65% - justified raping women who wear “clothing that shows off the body.”

And 58.5% of respondents also agreed that “if women knew how to behave, there would be fewer rapes.”

This poll has triggered outrage in the country, especially when it was revealed that most of the poll’s respondents - 66.5% - were women. So wait, it is okay to walk near-naked in a carnival, but not in real life? And women are the ones who believe this? There's absolutlely no excuse for rape! What do you guys think?
