* Mr. Maycock before the hammer attack
Mr Maycock has taken his first steps unaided, four years after being left with a huge dent in his head.
The 21-year-old man was just minutes from death after spending three weeks in a coma following the attack.
His grief-stricken family were told to prepare for the worst but doctors at Queens Medical Centre, Nottinghamshire, managed to save his life by cutting away his skull to relieve swelling.

* Mr Maycock after the attack
Mr Maycock, from Leicester, has now begun walking for the first time after being confined to a wheelchair when he left hospital.
Two men were jailed over the ‘merciless’ hammer attack in 2010.
