The Managing Director of LASAWA, Olayinka Marinho, Lagos State Waterways Authority, announced the ban and added that there has been a warning before to all the transport operations to ban night trips and acquire life jackets for all their passengers.
He commented on the accident in Lagos: “The boat was travelling at night, overloaded, and no one on board wore life jacket. It is unfortunate that people find it hard to heed warnings... Four school children and some adults have been confirmed dead, we are still carrying out investigations on the number of male adults on board..."
"We don’t support passengers travelling at night in view of the threat to passengers’ security...No operator or passenger should travel at night, especially in boats without navigational lights..."
Marinho added that LASAWA will be enforcing all the travellers to use life jackets, control over-loading of the boats and discourage the night travel.
The accident took place on Tuesday night, taking the lives of 18 people. Some of the bodies have been retrieved already, while the search is still in process.
As of today, all the waterways in Lagos will be open for operation from 6 a.m. till 6 p.m.
