Following
claims by Nigeria's defense chief that the country's military had found
the location of more than 200 missing schoolgirls, the United States
has said that it has been unable to verify that claim.
Speaking
a day after Nigerian Air Marshal Alex Badeh claimed to know the
location of the girls, the U.S. department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, they
do not have independent information to confirm Nigeria’s claims, while
also questioning the wisdom of making public such information.
"We don’t have independent information from the United States to support these reports that you referenced.
"We,
as a matter of policy and for the girls’ safety and well being, would
not discuss publicly this sort of information regardless," Psaki said.
The
United states and other nations have been helping Nigeria in the search
for over 200 girls who were abducted on April 14 from their school in
Chibok, Borno state by the deadly Boko Haram insurgents.
On Monday, May 28, the the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, revealed that the Nigerian security leadership had located where members of Boko Haram were holding the abducted girls.
His shocking revelation came after the Nigeria government refused negotiating with the Boko Haram sect on the release of the schoolgirls.
