The news was announced by the state Governor Kashim Shettima's Special Adviser on Communication, Isa Gusau.

Ahmad died after a protracted illness at a private hospital in Cairo, Egypt.

Governor Shettima expressed his condolences to the deceased's family and the state's residents. The Chief Imam was, according to Shettima, one of Borno State's strongest pillars and will be greatly missed, especially at the time when his leadership and prayers are needed the most. This is a significant loss both for Borno and for Northern Nigeria and the country at large.

Born in 1924, Ahmad was the longest-serving Chief Imam of Borno State: he served for 63 years. He is survived by his three wives, their many children, grand- and great-grandchildren.
