The main opposition party of Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC), wants President Jonathan to cancel the political rally in Adamawa State being scheduled for April 29, 2014, Tuesday. The APC noted the president should stay away from celebrations unless 200 abducted schoolgirls would have been rescued.
According to the statement dated April 24, 2014, Thursday, issued in Lagos by the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the president must not repeat the mistake he committed less than 24 hours after the deadly Abuja bomb blast.
“The President should not repeat the same mistake, if indeed he considered that to be one. He should see the missing girls as his own daughters and stop forthwith his illegal campaign rallies.”The APC noted that the rally of the Peoples Democratic Party would serve as a distracting factor, while there should be a concerted national effort to find the abducted girls and reunite them safely with their families.
The statement reminded that President Jonathan’s aides have linked him to Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama and some other great global leaders.
“Does President Jonathan honestly believe that Mandela, in his days as President, would have been campaigning when his compatriots are being daily bombed or abducted?” Lai Mohammed asked rhetorically. The president should take time to ask himself “How Obama would have reacted to one missing girl from any school in the U.S.A., not to talk of over 200 missing girls?”.
The APC further declared that they were not calling for shutting governmental activities down. All the opposition party wants is cancellation of all the celebratory public outings and all the political campaigns, unless the crisis with missing schoolgirls is solved.
It would be added that Boko Haram sect has allegedly claimed responsibility for abduction of over 200 female students in Borno States, threatened to kill all of the hostages if the search and rescue operation would not be stopped.
