The government of Lagos State has not given up on appellation against the release of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, the ex- Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late military ruler General Sani Abacha. The authorities informed on April 23, 2014, Wednesday that they would pursue the case at the Supreme Court.
Despite slow development, the process of appeal had been instituted at the Appeal Court. It has been also learnt that the appeal had been transferred to the Supreme Court from there.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, Mr Ade Ipaye, assured that all the necessary legal steps to ensure diligent prosecution of the matter were being taken. Despite the Appeal Court failed to entertain the matter on technical grounds, the government had not given up and approached the Supreme Court.
It would be recalled that Al-Mustapha was acquitted in July 2013 after spending 14 years in prison. The decision triggered mixed reactions in Nigerian society, outrage of the family. The Government of Lagos State did not accept this decision either, filed an appeal in August 2013.
