The controversy which surrounded absence of National Conference delegate and her removal from the Confab has been finally resolved.
Persistent absence of the delegate, and the Chairman of the Civil Society, Labour, Youths and Sports Committee at the conference, Mrs Bola Ogunrinade, has been spotted and the appropriate actions were taken. The Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Vice Chairman of the mentioned committee, Mr Issa Aremu, announced her removal in Abuja on April 23, 2014, Wednesday.
“The chairperson has not reported formally and the committee has taken off. It is going to be difficult to drive a committee which you don’t know the concept and the idea we have been running.”However, it has been gathered by The Punch that Ogunrinade took a permission from the Chairman of the Conference, Justice Idris Kutigi.
She disclosed that she has previously addressed with a written request to grant her a leave for April 16-23, 2014, “to travel to sort out urgent domestic matters”. Since the leadership of the conference has no objections, she came back on April 24, 2014.
The delegate further debunked the allegations that she has been shunning the event, emphasised on her commitment to the “Nigerian project”, devotion to social and community work, including youth re-orientation and development.
It would be recalled that the National Conference kicked off in Abuja on March 17, 2014. The role of the event for the history of Nigeria is still under question. It may fail just like Obasanjo’s National Political Reforms Conference in 2005. The only issue which remains undisputed right now is the high cost of the event.
